Local organization helps returning vets adopt a pet
A Glastonbury, CT based non-profit, Pets On Wheels of Connecticut is working with professionals counseling returning and past combat veterans who would benefit from having their own cat or dog, however need outside assistance for this to happen. Pets on Wheels of Connecticut provides this assistance after a professional has referred a potential recipients via our on-line application.. The animals are adopted from local rescue shelters.
More and more veterans are being advised to adopt a pet upon returning home. Pets can help alleviate stress, loneliness and anxiety. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says pets can decrease your blood pressure, cholesterol levels, triglyceride levels and feelings of loneliness. Pets can increase your opportunities for exercise and outdoor activities and opportunities for socialization. Caring for a pet is a very effective way to help veterans assimilate back into normal life. Pets on Wheels of CT is working in conjunction with rescue shelters, veterinarians, and social workers to match up pets with loving families.
“We are so excited at the idea of being able to help our returning veterans get the pet that they’ve always wanted”, stated Elaine Papanic, Executive Director of Pets on Wheels. “These people deserve our gratitude and respect and this is our way of giving back”, she went on to say.
